Our Nursery: Teaser

Now that my nesting bug finally kicked in, I have been getting things in order in the babies room. If you just started following or don’t know much about our house, its itty bitty. It’s an old beach cottage that is somewhere under 600 sq ft (aprox 520 sq ft). It’s technically a two bedroom but you can imagine with 520 sq. ft. those bedrooms are pretty small, especially the second bedroom. Also, because the cottage is from the early 1900′s closet space is nearly non existent, therefor we built Mama’s closet  into the second bedroom.

You may find yourself asking: why aren’t they moving?

Well, because our house is pretty adorable. And we love living in Santa Monica (a place with sky high rents we somehow have sort of avoided). Because we love being able to walk to the beach. Because we love our massive yard and vegetable garden (we didn’t even have a fire escape in SF). Because we love that we have a little mini house, instead of an apartment. And because we love that having a small house forces us to edit and keep things as simple as possible. And because, tiny as it may be it seems like a great place for our family.

But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its challenges.

When we first found out we were pregnant we did briefly consider the idea of whether or not we should move. If we moved, it would be one more thing on our plate and we decided to rule it out early on. We are crafty and organized and figured we could make it work. Even if John sometimes feels like the walls are moving in on him (I imagine our house feels even smaller when you are 6’2″).

So I started doing some research. Looking at Manhattan moms for ideas. Women who managed to have babies while living in 300 sq. ft. apartments. And deciding what we would actually need and what we wouldn’t. Because if you ask me, Americans tend to buy waaay more than they need, especialllllly when it comes to babies. Those families that have “playrooms” full of plastic crap toys in what used to be their living room make me cringe. And I started to feel like it was definitely possible and I kind of liked the challenge.

Since I am finally getting things in order in there and I’m hoping I can wrap it up shortly and photograph it before the baby arrives, I thought it would be fun to share a little teaser in the meantime.  So here is a little style board that will give you an idea of what we are cooking up!

I re-used some things from elsewhere in the house or from our storage unit and added in a few other things on the cheap.

We knew we wanted the Bloom Alma Mini Crib because of its size. When a co-worker of John’s told us she had one and would sell it to us for $100 (including the organic mattress and sheets) we jumped at the chance. Initially I had wanted the white one because I thought it would feel calm and minimal in a tiny space. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the orange color at first. But at that price, I figured I would make it work. In the end I actually ended up loving it and I think it set the tone for the whole room!

My mother gifted me her original Knoll butterfly chair and a new leather sling seat for it. I knew I loved the chair but I had no idea where I was going to use it in our small house. It felt like a shame to put it outside, although, there literally was nowhere else to put it. Initially I thought if the nursery was going to have a chair it needed to be a rocker. But one day John sat me down in the Butterfly chair and put the headphones on me (playing Yo Yo Ma) trying to get his pregnant wife to just relax for a bit and I actually fell asleep in the chair! I figured if I could manage to fall asleep in it then I could nurse in it.

I love the mix of textures in the babies room and I love that its just the right balance of soft enough for baby but sophisticated enough that it blends with the rest of the house. Can’t wait to finish it up and share the real deal with you!!!

Oh. My. Gah. – Stilleben Highchair

Is this not the most beautiful high chair you have ever seen in you life?

stilleben highchair

When I saw it, I was sure it would cost a million dollars.
When it turned out that it doesn’t cost a million dollars, I was sure that they would not ship to the US.
When it turned out that they did ship to the US, I was sure it would cost a million dollars.

I was wrong.

There is not a lot of product information on their site but we fell in love instantly.

And sometimes when you fall in love, you do stupid things.

We bought this beautiful sexy highchair.

Even if we don’t know where it will go, or exactly how big it is, or how long it will be until we use it, or if it will arrive in one piece.

But despite all that, we are in love. And we just bought the most beautiful highchair we have ever seen in our lives.

Europeans just do baby stuff 500% better than we do.

Poppin

Have you guys heard of Poppin? It’s pretty much the coolest office supply place around. If you have an ounce of O.C.D or neat freak in you, you will love this place. The thing I love the most, is that you can shop by color! So fun! We recently ordered some stuff for our office (in white, a little less fun) and we are pretty pleased with it. Also when you place an order you can see how additionally cute their packaging is. The only thing I am bummed about is that not all products are available in all colors. The site is still called Poppin “beta” so I’m hoping that the product lines will expand once they gauge the success of the site.

I figured that since there is likely a lot of the spring cleaning bug going around right now, some of you might want to check it out. Oh and did I mention that their prices are super affordable? I swear this isn’t a paid advertisement, haha I am just THAT excited about color co-ordinated office supplies! haha.

Unfortunate Realization

Every house is a work in progress, and our house is still fairly new (in the large scheme of things) so I’m still constantly evaluating it. Recently, I came to an unfortunate realization. The reason I am unhappy with the current state of our living room is that its full of dark furniture. I got the worlds smallest living room and then filled it with dark heavy furniture! I also feel that because we live so close to the ocean things should be light and airy. The thing is, its not like I went out and purchased heavy dark furniture for the space. We are not in a position to buy all new furniture for a space, especially a rental space. We brought with us what we had and re-worked it in the new space. And it’s not that i dislike the furniture, I just wish I could will it to be another color…like…white. haha.

Should I get crazy and re finish stuff? Get over it and live with it? Slowly replace things? I don’t know, but at least now I know what the “problem” is. ha.

blurg.

Crafty Sunday

I wanted to share a little DIY project I did today. A little clustering of chalkboard painted clipboards for the kitchen.

John has been baking a lot of bread lately, but he hasn’t quite memorized the measurements yet. He wanted to have easy access to it and he suggested that we paint the wall next to the oven with chalkboard paint. I thought that was a really cute idea but decided to tweak it a little bit. I like the multi use of the clipboards and I also like the mixing of materials. It’s a fun new addition to the kitchen.

For those of you that are interested in trying it yourself, it couldn’t be easier. We already had the two larger clipboards, but we wanted to vary the scale a bit for interest, so John picked up the 3 smaller ones at an office supply store. Most places carry a chalkboard paint these days since they are so popular, I picked this one up at Sherwin Williams and I was happy that it came in a small size (about a pt) since we didn’t need all that much. There’s no prepping involved. I didn’t remove the metal clips or anything. I would recommend keeping your paint strokes uniform, i.e, keep all your strokes horizontal so it looks smooth and even. When you get to the area under the clip, simply pinch the clip open and paint under the area. Don’t worry if you get paint on the metal, if you catch it while its still wet, it will wipe off real easy with a paper towel. Go ahead and close the clip, it should open up real easy once its dry (so long as your paint isn’t too thick. The paint dries really quickly, so go ahead and do two coats so that they look nice and black. Then, hang them however you like and get cookin’!

Studio Tour: Love Me Do Photography

I have a special treat for your guys today, before you head off to your weekend. The girls over at Love Me Do Photography recently moved into a new studio, which meant they got to design a whole new space and they have been kind enough to share it with us!

who are you/ what do you do/ where are you located?
We are Carina and Amanda, freelance and wedding photographers operating under the trademark Love Me Do Photography.
Our studio is located in Philadelphia, Pa.

what is your favorite thing about your job?
Taking pictures! You’d think we get tired of always photographing things, but every chance we get to do something fun with photography, we’re on top of it! Also, we like hanging out together. It’s really nice to have a partner working along side with you, especially when you’re self employed. We could be working on totally different projects, but having someone there to talk and joke around with really makes the whole working experience a lot more enjoyable.

how long have you been in the space?
We moved our studio back in May of 2011, but there was a bit of construction still going on, so we officially starting using the space around July or August of 2011.

whats the square footage?
apx 600 sq ft

whats your favorite thing in the neighborhood… or what do you love about the neighborhood?
We have an authentic mexican restaurant right across the street from us. I mean, can you really get much better than that?? There’s also an abundance of coffee shops, bars, restaurants and boutiques just up the block from us, and we share the building with dozens of other artists. It’s a nice little community.

what are your must haves for a creative space?
Good natural lighting is #1. We work with light, so having our space well lit is a must. Also, we didn’t want it to be too bright in there because we work on computers. So we picked a studio that faces northwest. We also wanted the studio to be spacious, yet manageable. We didn’t want something that was going to be overwhelming, but we didn’t want to be squished either. This space turned out perfectly for us!

what was your biggest resource for designing the space?
Thrift stores and our friends. We had collected a good deal of antique furniture and items from thrift shops, flea markets and estate sales. Putting them together took some thought on our end, making sure pieces fit well together and that it just didn’t look like a bunch of mis-matched furniture and items throw about. We also have a good deal of talented friends who hand-made a bunch of our items in the studio.

Here’s a short list:
Desk and bookshelf: made by Kaman + Erland
Large wooden table: made by Jesse Parsons
Buffalo paper mache head: Meg Lemieur

We took ideas from Design Sponge to paint the buffet table (grey and white stripes).

do you have a favorite item or area in the studio?
My favorite item is definitely the Buffalo Head. A close second would be a 4-way tie between my desk, the table, the coffee table, and our pink couch.

I hope you all enjoyed the space as much as I did! Thanks for sharing Carina & Amanda. If you haven’t already checked out the amazing photos that these two take, please be sure to do so…you won’t regret it. Have a happy and inspiring weekend everybody.
